Learning to write is like learning anything else and can be broken down into three general parts.

It's critical to understand these elements and how they are related.

Plot, Style, Character Development, and Length are always related. Any good novel has exactly the right balance of each, one that is appropriate to the genre and story.

Also, it's important to note that genres tend to "weight" those four factors differently. In literary fiction, the weighting generally goes something like this:

Publishing is a business. Writing may be art, but publishing, when all is said and done, comes down to dollars. Keep that in mind.

I say this because of the volume of mail I receive from unpublished writers who believe that "having a good story," is enough to guarantee success.

It's not.

Success can be defined any number of ways. For the purposes of this section, let success be whatever "your" version of it is, with one caveat: you want to be able to write novels and earn enough to make a living.

There are only three steps to this:

* Write a great novel
* Research literary agents
* Write a great query letter
