When you attend a conference, you'll likely have the opportunity to sign up for an appointment with an editor or agent. Whatever stage your career is currently at, you should seriously consider taking advantage of this chance. You might end up selling a book (I did!) and at the very least, you'll gain valuable experience and know that you're a professional who is taking your career seriously.
